Why Your Heating Bills Matter

Heating accounts for the largest portion of most UK household energy bills—often 40% or more. During winter months, many homeowners find themselves paying significantly more than necessary because they're unaware of simple, cost-effective changes they can make. The good news is that reducing your heating costs doesn't always require expensive upgrades. Many of the most effective strategies are straightforward and can be implemented quickly.

Whether you're looking to shave a few pounds off your monthly bill or make substantial savings, these ten practical tips from our Gas Safe registered engineers will help you heat your home more efficiently.

1. Bleed Your Radiators

Air trapped inside your radiators prevents them from heating evenly and forces your boiler to work harder. Bleeding radiators—releasing the trapped air—is one of the simplest and cheapest fixes you can do yourself. You'll notice some radiators stay cold at the top while the bottom is warm, which is a clear sign they need bleeding.

All you need is a radiator key (about £2 from any DIY store) and a cloth to catch any water. Bleed radiators at the start of winter, when you first switch on heating. This small maintenance task can improve heating efficiency immediately.

2. Turn Your Thermostat Down by Just 1 Degree

Reducing your room temperature by a single degree can cut your heating bills by up to 10%. Most people are comfortable at 18-21°C, so try lowering it by one degree and wearing a jumper. You may not feel the difference, but your energy bill will.

If you live in a multi-storey home, remember that heat rises. Keep upstairs temperatures slightly lower than downstairs, and you'll maintain comfort while using less energy.

3. Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

Modern programmable thermostats allow you to set different temperatures for different times of day. You can heat your home to a comfortable temperature when you're there, then lower it when you're away or asleep. Smart thermostats go further—they learn your patterns and adjust automatically, or let you control heating remotely from your phone.

Most homeowners can save £10-15 per month with a basic programmable thermostat, and up to £20-25 with a smart device. Over a heating season, these savings add up quickly.

4. Draught-Proof Your Windows and Doors

Drafts around windows and doors account for a surprising amount of heat loss. Cold air leaks in, warm air leaks out, and your boiler compensates by working harder. Check for gaps around door frames, window seals, and letterboxes.

Simple solutions include weatherstripping tape, caulk, and draught excluders. Many of these cost just a few pounds, but can save significantly on heating bills. They also improve comfort by eliminating cold spots near entrances and windows.

5. Insulate Your Loft

Heat rises, and a poorly insulated loft allows much of your home's warmth to escape through the roof. If your loft insulation is less than 270mm thick, it's worth topping it up. Government grants may be available to help cover costs.

Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective energy-saving measures you can take. A typical home can save £100-150 per year on heating costs once loft insulation is properly installed or upgraded.

6. Get Your System Power Flushed

Over time, sludge and corrosion build up inside heating pipes and radiators. This reduces flow, makes your boiler work harder, and wastes energy. A power flush cleans the entire system, restoring efficiency and improving heat distribution.

You may notice faster warm-up times, more even radiator heating, and improved boiler performance. Power flushing typically costs £400-800 but can add years to your boiler's life and reduce monthly bills.

7. Upgrade to a Condensing Boiler

If your boiler is more than 15 years old, it's likely a non-condensing model that wastes energy. Modern condensing boilers capture heat from flue gases, achieving efficiency rates of 90% or higher—compared to 60-70% for older boilers.

A new condensing boiler costs £2,500-4,000 fitted, but many homeowners recoup this through energy savings within 7-10 years. Plus, newer boilers are quieter, more reliable, and may qualify for renewable energy grants.

8. Install Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)

TRVs automatically adjust individual radiator flow based on room temperature. This means you can set different temperatures for different rooms without manual adjustment. They're especially useful for rooms you don't always use—you can turn radiators down in spare bedrooms or rarely-used lounges.

TRVs typically cost £15-30 per radiator fitted by an engineer. They work best in homes where you want to heat some rooms more than others, and can save 10-15% on heating costs in the right situations.

9. Don't Heat Empty Rooms

Close doors to rooms you're not using, and turn off radiators in those spaces. This prevents heating from distributing throughout unused areas. In winter months, concentrate heating in rooms where you spend most of your time—living rooms and bedrooms.

Even without installing TRVs, simply closing radiator valves in spare rooms can make a noticeable difference to your bills, especially in homes with many rooms.

10. Get an Annual Boiler Service

A properly maintained boiler operates at peak efficiency. Annual servicing catches problems before they waste energy or lead to expensive breakdowns. During a service, engineers clean components, check efficiency levels, and replace worn parts.

A boiler service costs around £100-150 annually, but keeps your boiler running at top efficiency, ensures safety, and validates your warranty. It's one of the best investments you can make for consistent, reliable heating.

Quick Win: Reduce your thermostat by 1°C to save up to 10% on heating bills. No cost, immediate savings.
Investment Saver: Loft insulation costs £500-1,500 but saves £100-150 annually. Pays for itself in 5-10 years.
Long-Term Upgrade: A new condensing boiler saves 20-30% on heating bills compared to older models. Ideal if your boiler is over 15 years old.
